U.S. Route 20 was announced on November 11, 1925, the same day as Route 66 as part of a Uniform System of Highways. It was officially designated one year later. The zero “0” indicates that the route is a transcontinental highway across the United States. Beginning in Boston, Massachusetts tracing old Native footpaths, Route 20, after several oppositions and road upgrades, reached Newport, Oregon in 1943. It is currently the LONGEST highway in America at 3365 miles!
In 1952, the state of Iowa began moving Highway 20 to a four-lane high speed highway, bypassing many of our historic downtowns. The four-lane was finally completed in 2018.
In 2013, Bryan Farr founded The Historic US Route 20 Association and began getting each state on board with his mission to get all of US Route 20 designated as a historic highway, like Route 66, Route 6, Route 30 and others. It’s a way of slowing down, taking in the sites and finding all the fun history along America’s Longest Highway.
